A new park for families and children has opened in Fishermans Bend, in another major step in the transformation of the area.
A fun family day with children’s activities, music and food opened the park on Saturday October 20, opposite South Melbourne Primary School at 2-4 Buckhurst Street, Port Melbourne.
The name of Kirrip Park was chosen through an extensive community consultation process by City of Port Phillip. ‘Kirrip’ means friendship or mate in the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung languages.
The new park is a key part of the Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct, a catalyst project for Fishermans Bend that provides more public space, community services and facilities for the growing community. It features a paved entrance and forecourt area facing Buckhurst Street, four lawn areas, outdoor LED lighting, multiple seating areas and paths, and native garden beds.
The precinct features Victoria’s first vertical primary school which is finishing its first year of operation, tram stop and street upgrades as well as streetscaping to improve safety, accessibility and connections to the surrounding area.
Kirrip Park is a joint project between the Victorian Government and the City of Port Phillip.
