Families in Fishermans Bend and Port Melbourne are a step closer to a new primary school, with the recent Victorian Government decision to acquire land in the Wirraway Precinct.

The land acquisition is exciting news for current and future local families, helping meet the needs of the growing population across the area with a brand-new, modern school.

Set to open from term 1 of the 2026 school year, bringing with it the capacity for up to 650 primary school students, the Fishermans Bend Primary School (interim name) will be the third new school delivered in the precinct, complementing the existing South Melbourne Primary School in Montague, and Port Melbourne Secondary College in Wirraway.

From term 1 of the 2027 school year, a kindergarten will also open at the Fishermans Bend Primary School site.

The Department of Transport and Planning is working closely with Council and the VSBA towards the provision of road safety upgrades to support the opening of the new school. DTP has prioritised transport upgrades along Smith Street and a new signalised crossing across Williamstown Road to provide safe access to the school.

As the school gates open in 2026,  local children will be able to access their education within a safe and easy walk or bike ride from home, supporting the vision for a family-friendly neighbourhood in Wirraway.

Visit the VSBA website for more updates on the Fishermans Bend Primary School and kindergarten.
